What if sometime during 1861, the Mormons in Utah Territory attempt to secede from the Union, form an independent Republic of Deseret, and ally themselves with the Confederacy? At the time, relations with the Mormons and the Federal Government were extremely low (the Utah War had been two years earlier), and many Mormons were afraid of the immigration of non Mormons and the persecution of their religion so secession doesn't sound entirely impossible.

If it were to somehow happen though, how much of an overall impact would it have on the war? Here are a few I was thinking of:

1)California is cut off from the Union.

2)Because California is cut off from the Union, certain Union soldiers deployed in California (Winfield Scott Hancock, Joseph Hooker, Henry Halleck, and John Fremont as well as others) would never be deployed in the East, or their deployment in the East would be delayed considerably, or Mormon secession happens as their redeployment is occurring and they are captured.

3)Southwestern US (New Mexico/Arizona) would probably fall under Confederacy occupation while Utah, Nevada, and parts of Colorado, Montana, and Idaho fall under Mormon occupation.

4)Tens of thousands of Union troops who should be fighting the Confederacy are sent West to guard the frontier/retake Utah and reestablish communication with California.

5)All gold production in the area never gets into the hands of the Federal government.

Are these possible and if so, how much could the alter the Civil War?
