Impact of Libya being conquered by Egypt

What would have happened long term if Egypt conquers and keeps Libya? I am assuming that the Libyan oil would help the Egyptian economy.

"Libyan–Egyptian War was a short border war between Libya and Egypt in July 1977.

On July 21, 1977, there were first gun battles between troops on the border, followed by land and air strikes. On July 24, the combatants agreed to a ceasefire under the mediation of the President of Algeria Houari Boumediène and the Palestine Liberation Organization leader Yasser Arafat."

Egypt would be much stronger with all that extra oil and territory. They might see an expansionist thirst lead them to possible conquer Sudan which would be interesting to see.

Riots would break out across occupied Libya. Libya was crafted by the Ottomans, and later the Italians for their own gain with no regard for the diverse tribes living there. Gaddafi's regime instilled fear into the population, so there was no ethnic chaos then. Libyans are not going take kindly to Egyptian occupiers and other international countries, especially Gaddafi's allies will eventually seek to take action against Egypt.

Isn't Egypt's population 30-40 times larger? With the revenue offered by Libya's oil and the ongoing issues they had, I could see Egypt swamping Libya with settlers forcing their majority and resorting to distasteful measures to hold onto it. Sadat needs to salvage the economy after all and a successful war always distracts people from domestic issues.

If this Egypt made peace with Israel, I can only imagine the chaos it would stir. A Muslim country invading a fellow Muslim country and making peace with the Jews? Sadat likely still is assassinated.

I would think it would only annex Cyrenaica - to my knowledge that is the region with all of the oil. The rest has sand and angry people. Egypt already has plenty of that.

A better solution would be to declare Libya a colonial abomination and split it in two. Taking care to render Cyrenaica a puppet state.

I don't see Egypt doing that. Too much problems. And it just would make other Arab nations mad. Cyrenaica is possible but Egypt hardly would take more.

A long time ago I had the idea of the British offering the Egyptians Libya as a bribe to get them to declare war on the Axis in June 1940. I think that would be a better POD than 1977.

Interesting idea - if not all then a westward move of the border - to a 'more defensive line'!
Often wondered what it would take for a less anti-British stance by the Egyptian Army.

How about the Egyptians get back Kufra, which had been ceded to the Italians after WWI? Might be issues with areas in the south that had previously been part of Sudan, but who knows? Maybe the Egyptians would use the offer as a way to tempt the Sudanese into dropping their claim to the disputed areas on the Red Sea.
