Imagining A Different Malta?

Perhaps this one should be in the pre 1900 forum. I would love to hear suggestions as to how Malta could have developed differently as eg A French colony, Portugese Colony, Part of Italy or remaining part of the UK or any other way!

As a Maltese person I find this idea pretty intriguing, perhaps Malta being firmly in the Soviet Block, to the point of having a naval base would be pretty interesting, then again don't know how that would work besides having an even more radical Dom Mintoff, or even instead of integration with Europe, they do just as the labour government wanted, and have close relations with north African state's such as Qaddafi's Libya. Lot's of possibilites ;)

Aw, man, I thought we were going to talk about a futile German airborne invasion of Malta here.

And yeah, pre 1900 would probably be better fit for this thread if you want to take the POD back as far as the initial British acquisition of the island.

Definitely Pre-1900, it requires a POD at least somewhere back in the Napoleonic Wars that dramatically increases French Mediterranean naval power.

This can't work with a POD after the 1814 Treaty of Paris, anyone who tries (and only the Italians and French are in any position to) is going to get a pile-driver from the RN.

Color Copycat gave me an idea. What if the Nazis go through with said airborn invasion successfully and then at the end of the war an ASB tells stalin he should go liberate the island and he does. Now the tiny island nation is very thankful and decides to be part of the soviet bloc and could even cause a cuban style missile crisis if nukes are put there but even if not it still would have naval and air bases that would really scare Italy and France

Well, You could have the Italians take the island in summer '40, when the brits had pretty much written it off as indefensible.

Of course that requires Benny the Moose to actually have a plan beyond just getting in on the looting...

What about the idea of Malta being part of the UK, lock stock and barrel? I seem to recall that that idea did float around for a while....
