Il grande Mediatore vive: An Aldo Moro Survives TL

Opening
"Aldo Moro's charisma, patience and wit saved his life. His negotiation skills brought him survival in the midst of his political opponents, and his dramatic release from his captors will go down in history as the seminal moment for Italian history in the latter half of the 20th century." - A History of Class in the Italian peninsula and It's mediators, by Lionello Puppi, Italian Historian and Communist Party member.

"God has saved Italy one of it's greatest souls. Italia cannot pay the Lord back for what he has done for us today". - Bettino Craxi's official response to Aldo Moro's release, 1978.

"Even the big boar could not do anything but tremble as his antithesis sprang from the jaws of death. He was a startling yet majestic apparition for us all." - Giulio Andreotti in his personal memoirs.

God help Moro ! Both Craxi and Andreotti were so corrupts, Berlusconi looked like Eliott Ness in comparison to them. :p

Italian politics I don't know much about. From memory: Wasn't Moro on the brink of a major breakthrough, unifiying the Italian left a bit like Mitterrand did in France at the same moment ? and the he was kidnapped and murdered.

Excited for this TL, Il Professore a great loss, and this can really change the mood of the Italian 80s. Will the First Republic (party system) survive with him?

Regarding Moro, much depend on how he live; the Brigate Rosse even proposed to exchange his life with a single imprisoned member (and not even an important one) as their plan was to gain legitimization from the act of the state of negotiate with them; it's still a very controversial move but at the time the act of not 'surrender' to the terrorist request was considered one of the factors to the Red Brigade defeat and a sign that the state was strong. Frankly it's just better if Moro is freed from the Red Brigade by the police (there were a lot of close call).

A continuation of the goverment of national solidarity and the PCI becoming a viable goverment force will change a lot of the italian 80's; sure there will need a lot of reassurance of the NATO patner about Italy remaining a loyal member if the PCI under Berlinguer form a goverment but it will just in the first moment, soon everybody will understand that relations between Moscow and the PCI leaderships are between cold and bad due to Berlinguer eurocommunism and pro-western attitude...on the other hand this can start a division in the PCI between hardliner lead by Cossutta and reformist even greater than OTL.

Andreotti will be safe, that man was basically untouchable except in case of full revolution or the use of a consacrated strong piece of wood right in the heart (maybe), he know were all the skeleton are buried, Moro included (you can't stay in italian politics at this level for such time without having at least a couple)
