If Trotskys dead, does Stalin still come to power?

In my study of Stalin at school, I found out one of the reasons that he was able to take control was that no one wanted to see Trotsky in power.

So... say Trotsky tripped and cracked his head on the pavement in 1923.

Would Stalin still become the leader of the USSR?

If not, who would?

I don't see how Trotsky's death in 1922 or 23 would do anything other than solidify the power of Stalin, Zinoviev and Kamenev.

Everyone in the top positions except for Trotsky never thought of Stalin as a threat and never saw him as one. They only realized him as a threat when he finally got enough power to take action against the others.

That doesn't mean they won't go for total power when they have a shot. They may well might figure they don't need him any more and go for it.
