If the US enters WW2 earlier.

Has any one looked at, what if FDR had enacted the oil embargo against Japan, in the summer of 1940, instead of the summer of 1941.
Suppossing Japan attacks the US in December 1940. Does Hitler still declare war on the US, if so what happens to barbarossa, does it go ahead. Maybe Hitler decides it is even more important Russia be knocked out of the war quickly.

Nice topic.

Have you thought about if the US acted on the Japanese invasions of China even earlier? as n 1936/7?

Would an oil embargo have strangled the Japanese aspirations? I don't know any of this, but I don't think Japan was ready to fight the US in 1936. Germany was not ready at all and the pacts with Japan were only starting to come together.

It would give US an opportunity to get invovled in world politics at a far earlier stage, but whether they could have entered into a war with Germany earlier is a good question. There might not have been any provocation if there was no Pearl Harbour.

Based ona lt of the other threads here, I think it would have been difficult for US have ahd the backing internally for any overseas venture.

Japan was not ready in 1940 and lacked the example of Taranto to go for a Paerl Harbor, December 1941 was literally the best time for them to attack. A US oil embargo would hurt them very badly and force them to attack to get more oil, which would make their defeat much easier and they would not catch the OTL Victory Disease
