If the Soviets decided to become a Naval Power after 1945?

Could they challange the Western Navies?Or start making hundreds of submarines to strangulate the Western merchant navies?


Immediately post war? Fuck no. Building a huge fleet was not only technically/logistically impossible so soon after the war but would have sent warning bells ringing across the Western world.

You'd probably see a much much smaller reduction in the size of the USN and larger retained fleets across the Dominions and other allies. If nothing else I'm not sure that the rest of the world's combined industrial capacity could match American shipbuilding in 1945.
