If the Himmelstrummer (jet pack) was finished for ww2?

What would the world be like if the jet pack a basic version was constructed before world war 2 or during world war 1. Or if world war 2 continued longer with the abscence of the atom bomb for example?

Its been said that back in the day cars didn't go through nearly as much testing as they do now. In some respects this is what halts at the very least a mechanical jetpack. So if a rough version was workin in the early 1900's would we have something more sophisticated today?

This is so close to ASB I can hear the wings flapping from here.

But, it's not.
Barking mad, yes.

Hmmm, Could it be used as a shock weapon in place of a parachute?
Falschirmjaeger using drop packs and screaming out of the sky would create quite a noise, probably a lot of exhaust smoke as well.

If the Americans got in on the act it would give "Screaming Eagles" a whole new meaning. :D

Agreed, but it depends on the culture and legal system. In wartime, crazy ideas are more likely to be tested - even insanely suicidal ideas. It's a major factor in the racing advancement of new technologies.

When you mean finished in time for the Second World War, I take it you mean that this thing enters full scale production in 1944.

If you were to outfit a regiment of Fallschirmjaegers with that jet pack, you would need months of training (a great deal of strength and dexterity is needed to fly a jet pack) and a hell load of resources. Unfortunately for the Germans, 1944 was a year when they had a shortage of both with bombing raids and the Amis and Ivans pushing toward Berlin from both sides.

Training would see a large part of the regiment written off out due to course rejects, both dead and alive. Further casualties would be incurred during combat as the Fallschirmjaegers would be sitting ducks as they flew over the battlefield. The Fallschirmjaegers can't control the jet pack and fire their weapon toward the ground at the same time. Chances are, anti-air artillery would be having a field day if the jet pack troops were unlucky enough to have one of them in their area of operations.

I am seeing a sort of SS Kommando unit under Skorzeny...

I wonder if anyone tries to escape Berlin using one! Bormann and his jetpack go down in history like Ferry and his balloon :)

Best Regards

Other than some really kick-ass stories for granddads to tell their grandkids about Stupid Jetpack Hitlers, and good pulp fodder, no real change other than another waste of a wunderwaffen.

The practical tactical use of jet packs is severely limited by range and difficulty in training.

Kickass Jetpack Skorzeny rocketing Mussolini to Germany is about the pinnacle of this WI. :D

I agree.

However,

Skorzeny/Mussolini!

Fire over the Alps!

"...As they flew over the Alto Adige on a column of flame, as he was being carried effortlessly in the arms of Otto, that manly, sweaty, rugged Kommando was stirring something within Benito's chest... admiration? awe?... or was it... desire?"(1)

The slash fanfic!

...would be the bottom.(2)

(1) I think it is obvious: that I have no talent and that I have never read any slash fiction.
(2) Which would be the what. I think you can guess the who.(3)
(3) Skorzeny/The Who: the slash fanfic... I swear my own imagination is out to kill me. I need brain bleach and steel wool.

Enough, damn it! My mind's eye hurts bad enough without your sick images of Fascist man-smut. Any more such outbursts and I'll break out the leeches.

Kind of an apology is due...

It could very well have been Hanna Reitsch/Clara Petacci, Which would be a bit more defensible on aesthetic grounds alone as they both were -in my opinion- quite good looking. And I probably should have gone for that.

I do admit, however, that I might have crossed a line too many, and that as a humorous proposition it probably fell *quite* far from the mark. I honestly did not think it would be offensive.

I'll endeavour to exercise better impulse control in the future.

Please do accept my most heartfelt apologies.

LOL...you thought I was actually offended. :D

And GOOD LORD, man! How can you carry that moniker of yours and totally miss a Fear & Loathing reference? :p

It's a relief.

I was merely erring on the side of caution. It IS hard to know where the limits are sometimes, and I do acknowledge I do have a strange sense of humour.

Ah, the quote, now I know where I had seen that before!

It's been more than five years since reading that book for the last time... right after the Good Doctor decided he'd had enough... I lent it to a friend of mine and as it happens, I lost track of both friend and book right after...

...and then there was a flood, and an earthquake, and then my dog ate my homework which is why I don't have it with me today.:-D

Nosebleed...

However in anycase, the wiki article states that the jetpack was to be used by engineers to well, maneuver around, and not meant for combat troops. I dont really see the viability of that anyways. I suppose on rough ground it could be used to help with moving around while laying land mines or barbed wire.

Excuses, excuses.

I see an ENORMOUS Alien Space SeaLion looming in the background :D

With a Jet Pack.

Geekhis, break out the leeches.

I see your Revenge of the Moon Nazis and I raise it to:

Revenge of the Mah-jong playing Moon Nazis led by Smiling Hitler!

Not enough?

OK, how about a Smiling Hitler with precognition?

Still not enough? What more do you want, Super Saiyajin Battle Form Hitler?

I have that too.

And the crazyness doesn't end there.

One thing about the cartoon in Rocketeer bugs me, though: Did the Nazis have animators of that quality before WWII? That might be even more farfetched than the jetpacks themselves...
