Suppose that a Democrat is elected President in 1988. (It doesn't have to be Dukakis. It could be Gore, Gephardt, and anyone else who failed in the primaries or didn't run IOTL). Does Ross Perot still run for President in 1992 (or 1996 for that matter)? If so, does he run as an independent or as a Republican? How does the 1992 election play out with or without Perot?

It very much depends on the Democrat. Someone like Gephardt might pursue trade policies that Perot would be largely happy with.

That's true. I also know that he opposed the Persian Gulf War, which is a possible reason why he decided to run against Bush.

Under any Democrat, the deficit and debt would still be problems. So Perot could always hammer on that theme if he still decides to run. Though given his support for abortion I doubt he'd win the GOP nomination if he runs in the Republican primaries instead of making an independent bid.

How well would Perot do if he runs in the Republican primaries? The GOP frontrunner would probably be Bob Dole. Could Perot beat Dole?
