Whether through war or outright purchased if Britain had secured Cuba from Spain do you think at some point in the future it would have been integrated with Canada or continued on as its own independent entity?
There has been periodic debate about Canada annexing various bits of the British West Indies. I think that if the UK did annex Cuba, and Canada was going to include any of the west indies, I'd think Cuba would be a probable candidate.Whether through war or outright purchased if Britain had secured Cuba from Spain do you think at some point in the future it would have been integrated with Canada or continued on as its own independent entity?
No, despite stereotypes, Canada is just as, if not more, racist than the US. It won't possibly incorporate a Hispanic province. At all.
agreed. it would be a separate political entity within the British Empire, like Newfoundland used to be, before being granted independence like almost all other former British possessions, and unless it went through the same communist revolution as IOTL it would probably be part of the CommonwealthProbably an independent Colony and then Dominion or independence, the demographics and politics are too dramatically different without a very, very early PoD
Cuba is by definition a Hispanic nation. Period. I made no comment about the race or ethnicity of the people. Though just as the current pope is Hispanic because he's from Argentina despite no Hispanic "ethnicity" from his parents so too are Cubans Hispanic regardless of race.“Hispanic” as if it is a race on its own. Cuba, as are all nations of the new world, made up of several different racial groupings and mixes between those. Cuba itself, would be a plantation economy, with a small european planter populace and then large populations of African and mulatto. Do try to endeavor to be more precise than the term, ‘Hispanic.’
Large population of African. Do you know the ethnic breakdown of Cuba? Obviously not, at 9.3% of the total population the Afro-Cuban population is a less percentage than that of African-Americans in the US (at around 13%). Mulattos yes are "large" at 26%. But the nation is actually almost as "white" than the US at 64% versus 73%. But all Cubans would be Hispanic unless immigrants. But regardless of anything- people are Hispanic or not, of a race or not, only if they identify THEMSELVES as such, at least here in the US census (I am a Jew, but I can mark African-American on the census and I will be African-American for the census. Nothing illegal about it)“Hispanic” as if it is a race on its own. Cuba, as are all nations of the new world, made up of several different racial groupings and mixes between those. Weirdly I think a West Indies Federation excluding Cuba would be likely since Cuba is now the one they don't want dominant!More likely, the British would try to federate it with other Carribean colonies. I believe there was an attempt at a Federation of the West Indies, which I think fell apart because Jamaica was so much bigger than all of the other members. Though it does survive in its cricket team. Perhaps Cuba would be large enough to balance it out.
Do you research at all? In reality the PERCENTAGE of the population that is considered Black increased in modern-day times because of the migration of mostly White Cubans after Castro's revolution along with the immigration into Cuba of Jamaicans and Haitians. In 1871 56% of the nation was white.Your post said that Canada is/was racist. This is used in conjugation with ‘Hispanic,’ and their inability due to racism, to integrate Cuba. Thus, you are from my interpretation, claiming that this term is a race or ethnicity.
In reference to this issue, it is frequently touted on this forum some opinions of southern elite to capture Cuba. A question, why would some of the southern elite advocate an annexation of Cuba, if the racism toward Hispanics is some impediment? The modern concept of Hispanic, did not exist in times of the past, from my limited understanding.
Cuba in 2015 is different from 1850. 19th century Cuba experienced some ’blanquiamiento’ or whitening of its populace. Considering that in 1850, the population of Cuba was likely near 1 million, with which, more than 50% certainly, were either African descent (Negro), Mulatto or Mestizo; concieve what 800k Europe migrants from Galicia, Castile, Catalunya, Germany, etc would do for the demographics of the island? Thus, we are discussing Cuba prior to these whitening measures which were attempts by european overlords to change the demographics of the island.
(Just imagine George Washington growing up in Kingston? ooh, the butterflies....)

At the very least we would see the Bahamas, Turk and Caicos, and the Cayman Island being permanently attached to Cuba. Depending on when independence happens, I can see a lot of the Loyalists heading down there.More likely, the British would try to federate it with other Carribean colonies.
