If Russia left Von Sternberg alone

I find this part of history interesting. He was considered a descendant of Genghis Kahn and ruled like a bloody tyrant. What if the Russians never bothered with Mongolia and he is allowed to rule Mongolia longer?

Would we see Japan intervene in the 30s after Manchuria?

What are the chances, though, of his leaving Russia alone? He is one of those people who really brings home just what a broad, mutable and selfcontradictory definition "human" is, and make you wish that aliens really did exist so that then we could find an excuse for him.

I don't think it's really so much that he was considered a descendant or reincarnation of the great Temujin as that he proclaimed himself to be so, helped by lots of gunmen. Admittedly he was surprisingly constructive for someone so apparently completely mad, but his own long term plans were active and aggressive. He wanted to change the world in ways that could not be achieved by standing on the defensive.

As one of the last White generals standing, Red Russia would have to be in a fairly terrible state to ignore him, but granted that- I could see him thinking their inability to come and get him meant that they were ripe for the reborn Horde to go and get them.

I suppose the next question would be if he could survive. He would try and raise Mongolia to war. He may either go back into Russia, which would spell his end. Or he could go south and attack Chinese warlords.

The thing is, he died because he invaded Russia not the other way around. Russia was the focus of his mania. Change that and you change him rather drastically.

If we have a weaker Soviet Government, then it's safe to assume that, say, the Far East Republic is going to survive with him, and the Red Army won't be able to crush uprisings in Siberia. What this leaves is a strong jumping off point for Von Sternberg- part of his issue was that he jumping into Russia without knowing that the rebellions in Siberia had been crushed, so if the rebellions held strong it's not a stretch for Siberians to ally with him under the hopes of restoring order (I mean, he was batshit, but what he did with his corner of Mongolia shows he was able to keep some order). With control of Siberia, and either an alliance or control of the Far East Republic (alliance would mean he doesn't go and charge at Japan), then he would have a suitable region to sustain a nation. Say what you will about agriculture in the Russian Far East, but it can work. Give it ten years (or less), with him continuing to act on behalf of the The Bogd Khan, and he might finally feel he is ready to launch he re-invasion of the Soviet Union.

Would he be fighting to bring back the Monarchy or some sort of republic back to Russia? Or would be have other plans in mind?

Sternberg didn't give a fuck about Mongolia. That's a myth. He wanted Mongolia as a launching point for a campaign to restore fallen monarchies such as the Qings and Romanovs, and to kill Jews (whom he blamed for the fall of said monarchies). When he was captured Russian soldiers actually asked him why he hadn't used Mongol nationalism to his advantage, and he actually answered he didn't care about Mongols.

Had he been left alone, he would have been overthrown since the Mongols sure as heck did not want to restore former enemies to power, they wanted their own nation. They also didn't care much about killing Jews, most of them had never met a Jew.
