If not FDR in 1932

I was watching the American Experience Documentary about FDR and one part near the end caught my attention. It was the Democratic National Convention of 1928, and FDR was to introduce party nominee Al Smith. He didn't use his crutches when walking out on stage because it would have been political suicide at the time. IOTL he walked out using a technique with his cain by shifting his weight from side to side so that he could appear to be walking. He gave his shpeel and got his name back into the political game. Al Smith then gave Roosevelt the go-ahead to run for Governor of New York. Roosevelt wins his election, while Al Smith loses his.

What I was wondering was what would have happened if he had slip and fell at the convention? Would it have been as damaging to his political image as this documentary has made it out to be? If so, then who would be asked to run for governor of New York for the Democrats? It's too late to try and prevent the stock market crash, but who would the Democrats nominate in 1932 to challange Hoover? Was the 1932 election absolutely the Democrats to win?

John Nance Garner, Albert Ritchie... My memory is hazy. RB should be in here soon.
Yes, Huey Long could be the nominee and murder a baby and still probably win.
