If Montreal had kept its streetcars

Today is the first anniversary of the death of Leonard Cohen, originally from Montreal. When he was growing up, there was an extensive tramway network on the Island of Montreal. Some lines had lots of reserved track and they even got a few PCCs in later years. What if these lines were put underground in Old Montreal, aleviating congestion while keeping the trams?

For some infomation, Montreal was the last Canadian city outside Ontario still with streetcars. As elsewhere, they were blamed for causing traffic congestion in the city centre, where cars had to stop behind one to get passengers on and off. But some lines ran on reserved track in the suburbs. If these lines were put underground in the city centre, they would have been saved.
