If Jean-Paul Marat had the hiccups.

WI Jean-Paul Marat, because of a terrible bout of hiccups, wasn't in the bath, when Charlotte Corday came to visit him ?.

He stands a better chance of avoiding her attack. Suppose he's only wounded.

Granted he's ill anyway, but how much longer might he have lived.

Marat's sister believed he could have reconciled Danton and Robespierre.
Was this just wishful thinking. What if he had ?.

What if, one result of the assassination attempt, is that, all three are motivated by a sense of danger, to the revolution, of infighting. Marat was a very straight spoken man. Can he be the third man, that brokers, between the other two. Maybe Marat can to some degree pacify the Herbatists.

suppose this triumvirate, are able, to struggle their way through to, seriously
presenting an offer, of a process, that will lead, to the writing of a constitution. And representative elections. In short what if the squabbling factions, are have something to focus on, other than infighting. They're energies diverted into canvassing, for the constitution. The body that writes the constitution might come from local elections.

I'm not sure Marat's survival would be a good thing for the French Revolution... Marat was one of the main actors of the Massacres de Septembre (September slaughters) where he pushed mobs to ravage prisons and kill every prisonner they contain (which, at the time, were mostly priests that had refused the Constitution Civil du Clergé* if I recall correctly). Plus, he was often denouncing people he judged anti-revolutionnary/counter-revolutionnary in his newspaper, L'Ami du Peuple. In this same newspaper, Marat said he was ready for Dictature...

Robespierre is already a questionnable figure... But Marat would probably have been worse than him had he survived.

So we're basicaly back to a "Instead of Stalin, you get trotsky" kind of scenario ?

Nah, instead of Stalin you get Stalin with a headache.

The only possible plus is that Marat may have pushed too hard, and brought about the Thermidorian reaction sooner (at which point, of course it wouldn't ahve been Thermidorian, but hey). Might have saved a few people, maybe.
