If ItWere Possible would Clinton Have got A 3rd Term?

Not if her primary residence is at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. in Washington, DC. Also, if she does set up residence in NY in order to run for Senate, the charges of "carpetbagger" and the questions about Bill & Hill's marriage would over shadow both campaigns

I don't see how this changes Hillay's welcome to New York. The carpetbagger charge didn't stop her or Daniel Patrick Moynihan or Robert Kennedy.

I disagree with the people who say Clinton definitely would have won. Remember, when Gore was running, he had to make some efforts to distance himself from Clinton's scandals. I would expect that others in the Democratic Party would have pressured Clinton against running in 2000.

Clinton is a vastly better politician than Gore. Gore lost by a few hundred votes. IMO, Clinton wins at least 1% more of the popular vote, and it is not even consider a close election. Florida decisively breaks for Clinton, and we know the winner before many of the mid-western elections close. It is not a Reagan/FDR like landslide, but is consider a solid win, especially considering the difficulties of the second term.

Agreed he easily wins. However if we assume 9/11 happens on time, Clinton will have a hard time shifting blame for not having America's defense ready. So after the initial patriotic surge and possibly even some democratic gains in the off year elections, Republican wins in 2004. My money would be on McCain or another leader with military command experience. You might get a Bush on the ticket, but it would be Jeb.

Difference is that Clinton had already decided that bin Laden was # 1 on the Hit List. GW put Saddam above him.

What you wind up with is the same campaign to zap bin Laden, but without the ultimately pointless Iraq debacle.

Gore LOST the election because he distanced himself from Clinton. It was a HUGE error.

With or without the 22nd amendment there is a strong tradition of 2 terms and a lot of people who had voted for Clinton and then voted for Gore would not have voted for Clinton a third time because of the 2 term tradition. These votes would have off set the additional votes that Clinton’s superiority as a campaigner would have brought in. The election was so close anyway I just don’t feel comfortable projecting what would have happened.

Against GW Bush?

In a walk.

The tradition was broken by FDR. The only reason it hasn't happened since is the Amendment. Reagan would have been President until he died, or until his illness became so obvious that he couldn't campaign. Clinton mught STILL be President, although the heart issue might have derailed it.

when these questions come up, I always wonder if these people would want another term... being the President of the USA is a grinding grueling task that few would want to do for more than 8 years. Considering Monicagate and all the other stuff that happened in Clinton's 2nd term, I bet he really looked forward to the end of his time in the White House...

It was great to see him at the convention last night, I have heard in the past that a few commentators regard him as the first African American president such was his level of support in that community and level of empathy towards them!
There was a recent documentary series on him on Irish television and towards the end of it, they showed him saying goodbye to the white house press corr and he would have been well up for 4 more years!
I have heard it said that it was obvious from his demeanour that George W couldn't wait to get out of there at the end!
