If France won in Mexico

Just wondering if the French and Imperial Mexicans won in Mexico somehow what would be the relations between Mexico and France would it essentially be a puppet of France or would they be allies on equal footings

If France won in Mexico. Then there is a good chance they would be at war with the USA. They can't win that war. So after they loose that war. Mexico would go back to being an independent country.

I think you'd also require a decisive Confederate victory in the Civil War, since the U.S. did mass a few soldiers in southern Texas in 1866, to let the French know they were not welcome there.

In any event, Mexico could turn into a protectorate like what happened with Morocco or Vietnam.

That wouldn't necessarily do anything. The Confederates might actually support kicking the French out of Mexico.

The CSA would probably love to kick the French out and set up a friendly government in Mexico to help support them against the USA in case of future hostilities.

Could they afford to, though? That's the question.

In any case if the Yanks or Dix don't kick the French out the Mexicans themselves surely will eventually. The Austrian puppet emperor they set up wasn't all that popular, and unpopular rulers didn't last long in Mexico at the time.
