if FDR had died in 1921.

Okay, let's say Franklin Roosevelt dies when he contracts polio, or shortly thereafter. Now, I'm sure there will be butterflies in the Democratic party from this by the late twenties.

But my main question is, considering that FDR dying can't butterfly the depression away, who do the democrats nominate against Herbert Hoover?

After Roosevelt, Al Smith and Jack Garner led in the convention count. But in my opinion, neither are going to wind up with the nomination ITTL. Smith had been defeated in a landslide four years earlier. I doubt he would be rewarded with a renomination. Jack Garner was from Texas and as such, he was a southerner, unlikely to be elected during the time period in question.

So if Smith and Garner are out, who's in? Or by killing FDR have I reelected Herbert Hoover?

Well I know that Smith supported Newton D. Baker of Ohio against Roosevelt once it became clear he wasn't going to get the nomination. I could see a Baker-Garner ticket getting nominated.

Baker-Garner? Seems reasonable. Or perhaps James Reed, though Missouri might be too southern for the nations tastes.

Is the election in the fall any different? I mean, from what I know of Baker, he wasn't the most charismatic guy in the world. And FDR was nothing if not charismatic.

If you still have Hoover and he still reacts the same way he did OTL, you'll get a Democrat in the White House if he tries to run for re-election, unless the Republicans get a new candidate in there who is an anti-Hoover.

By then I think people were pissed enough with Hoover to vote him out, so there's a good chance a Baker-Garner ticket would have one. And when it comes to charisma, well...Hoover was pelted with rotted fruit whenever he tried to speak on the campaign trail. Take from that what you will.

I wonder what the Baker-Garner Administrations policies will be like. I suspect some of what we call the early new deal still happens. I think the FDIC has a good chance of existing ITTL, though I may be wrong. But I doubt very much it will be a carbon copy of what happened IOTL
