IDF-MNF firefight in Lebanon

Following the 1982 Israeli invasion of Lebanon, there were a few encounters between the IDF and Multi-National Force in Beirut, particularly with US Marines. The most famous one was when a Marine Captain compelled three IDF tanks to withdraw from his position by waving a pistol.

Suppose if the IDF had actually exchanged fire with the US Marines or with the British, French, or Italian troops?

The OP is embarrassingly close to the truth.
If you read Michael Pfaffer's book: "Warrior Spirit" you will realize how close IDF and USMC came to trading bullets.
Pfaffer served as a US Navy SEAL supporting the USMC mission in Lebanon. He recounts several confrontations between arrogant IDF tankers and USMC. Pfaffer was amazed that no shots were fired, especially considering all the thousands of rounds of harassment fire that impacted near USMC positions every day.
In the end Pfaffer left Lebanon severely disillusioned about the USMC's mission.
