Ideas for an Afghanistan thread

I am drawing ideas together for an Afghanistan TL revolving around a militia sponsored by a foreign multi national to exploit the mineral resources of the area. At this stage the MNC would be Russian or Chinese.

The militia would revolve around 100 - 150 men of various ages in a valley. So I am after input regarding weapons, tactics and advisers. For those that are interested the village would be predominantly Hazara or Uzbek and they have a poor relationship with the Taliban.

This TL will be set in 2000 and will continue during the NATO intervention. As they say questions, comments or doubtful point are welcome.

Well, a multinational could pretty much hire anyone they could get their hands on. There's nothing in the rulebook of merceneries that they'd have to just hire East Bloc people because they're Russian. That's something to think about.

Though obviously they'd have more luck picking up people from inside their own country. Most of these things revolve around personal relationships at some point: A lot of companies that do that kind of work (Executive Outcomes, Saracen) almost operate like clearing houses.

They're run by a board that is basically the only full-time employees. They then have a list of contacts, then build the mission roster out of that.

That's how EO and Saracen did their operations in Africa in the mid-90s, that's also how Greystone was apparently going to do it as well.

Another factor to take into consideration is how well connected and funded this company is. A company well connected and funded might be operating T-90s and or Type 98s while a company without that backing might have to settle for Type 59s or T-55s.

Oh I see what has happened here, didn't spell out my premise effectively enough. Think about mineral resource company that conducts random samplings and finds village X has large amounts of resource X.

As part of their drilling rights or access to the resources the local potentate asks for a training team to improve the effectiveness of the local villagers - think the 'Magnificent Seven' in Afghanistan.

Oh. Nevermind then. :)

Well, it's still kind of the same concept. The PMC would then look at people were capable of doing that job, most likely US Special Forces (we're talking Green Berets, here, not Rangers), SAS, Foreign Legion drill instructors, or certain elements of the Spetznaz.

You're looking for people who not only have the knowledge you need, but are trained in how to impart that knowledge to other people.

you could consider taking a look at the maasai campaign from Empire Earth 2; its set in the future, but follows a similar premise

So following some recent PM's here's what I've got:

An ethnic Turkmen located in Faryab province, he graduated from Kabul University in 1984 and was drafted into the Afghanistan Army. There he served with General Dostum, whom he followed at the collapse of the regime in 1992.

A turkish 'adviser' whom General Dostum does not trust is sidelined to my protagonist's valley. Thinking about introducing a Russian to recreate an element of the great game.

The Charles Bronson effect comes into play due to the killing of his family by the Taliban and the loss of the majority of his platoon due to a 'turncoat.'

Thoughts?
