ICWI: Less alien & more human characters on the Stargate: Universe show?

So as we all know Stargate: Universe was the shortest lived show out of all the Stargate shows, being cancelled after only 2 seasons and finally bringing the franchise to an end.

The show got poor ratings and many old Stargate fans didn't like the show. One of the reasons for this is thought to be the inclusion of many non-human characters to the main cast. Thus many viewers could not sympathies with the characters as the writers of the show tried to be edgy & different by constantly emphasized how unlike humans & how, well, alien the characters were. Others felt that the show rather than being edgy and original was trying to coppy other popular existing si-fi franchises like Star Wars by including many non-human main characters and so came off as a cheap knock-off. And let's not forget that the alien characters sucked up much of the show's budget (the CGI and makeup doesn't come cheap after all).

So do you think the show would have done better if the had included more human & less alien characters?

And since we're on the topic, who/what was your favorite character on the show?

OOC: in case this isn't clear, this is not an ASB WI where aliens are real and are actors in Hollywood. This is an ICWI were developers of Stargate: Universe decided to create a large number of alien & non-human main characters for the new show (like Christopher Judge's Teal'c, only maybe more non-human).

The problem wasn’t the aliens, it was that the characters no matter if human or alien were not very likeable and were fighting with each other early in the program. SG-1 and SGA had the central characters who worked together and were likable. SGU was suppose to be edgy but I think turned off fans of the other programs while at the same time not bringing in new fans. Later in the show the characters started to work together better and there was more of the feel of the other shows but it was too late.

True, but many of the conflicts resulted from humans and aliens not getting along very well due to culture gaps and whatnot. So if you get rid of the aliens, you get rid of at least some of the conflicts and thus have the characters get along better.

SGU was a fullblown Farscape rip-off which does not suprise me. SG-1 already used actors who played two main protagonists from Farscape so why not emulate Farscape completely?

Many alien characters with different agendas attempting to work on an isolated ship pursued by enemies? Yeah, original.

What doomed the show was relying on CGI instead of puppetry.

Dassan was awesome, especially his verbal spars with Rush, but CGI rendered due to his alien physiology so we never got episodes centering on him nor could he talk sense into conflicting parties on the ship. He spent most of the show walking around his lab repeating more or less the same calibrations over and over again.

Having Rodney on the show was a mistake, IMHO. All he did was piss off Rush and Eli. There was no Sheppard, Ronin or Carter to balance him out, and he needed that, as we saw in the several alternate realities we saw on Atlantis, otherwise he's just a smug pain in the ass.
