Ibero-american Union

Do you see any possibility of the Latin American countries, Portugal and Spain making up some sort of Commonwealth. Use any POD you like, but I was thinking along the lines of a more succesful Iberia in the 19th Century and a prosperous Latin America with Argentina and Mexico as the richer countries. Venezuela might also prove to be a prosperous state in the Union due to its vasts amounts of oil.

How's this:

The U.S. does really... REALLY... well in the Spanish-American War. We're talking annexation of all of Spain's non-European land and a land invasion of Spain herself, culmination in Spain becoming a U.S. puppet.

There, union.

I'm assuming you mean a British-style "Commonwealth" as in a loose economic and political confederation of independent nations rather than a political "United States of South America" here? The former seems possible at some level, assuming anyone would think to do it. It'd require a POD before 1900, I'd assume, and would at least at first only be a few nations (perhaps Spain, Mexico, Venezuela, Cuba, and such). If sucessful and profitable maybe it grows.

Yes I mean like a British-style Commonwealth, perhaps more united. Mainly being trade partners and having many joint organisations. It would require stability in all these Latin countries which is not very common (although in Spain it seems we are suceeding the last decades :D).

Yes I expect to mainly have centro-american nations at first (cuba, mexico) + spain but then it might extend southwards and have Brazil and Portugal join. These countries have a lot of potent but they have lacked political stability throughout the centuries.
