Iberian crusade?

I'm wondering what the results would have been if the Byzantines had not been in so much trouble, but Iberia had been sinking instead (and possibly France). In this event, would the Pope call a crusade? I know the crusade started becuase the Byzantine emeperor wanted some western knights, perhaps pleas for help from France and/or Leon? Who would end up holding the straights? Might we see some odd placed crusader kingdoms, like in Iberia or Morocco?

This is not too far from OTL. While the theology of Crusade was not fully worked out at the start of the Reconquista, it was clearly being developed there. Christians were already heading to Iberia as an act of penance.

I doubt you would get true Crusader states as IOTL. The conquered land is likely to be immediately annexed into/vassaled by one of the Iberian states.

Ah, curses. But, what if there are no Iberian states left, but the crusade agianst whatever caliphate at the time is widley sucessfull? (I'm sorry, my knowlege of this part of history is questionable, but I'm really quite curious!)
