Ian Fleming out of Bondage

For all the threads about alternate Bonds...I wanted to answer with one for all those people, like me, who would be happier if Bond didn't exist.

So: suppose Ian Fleming decides to write detective novels, or romances, instead. James Bond, superspy, never exists.

Is he replaced?

Does Quiller:cool::cool: or Matt Helm take his place?

Or do spy novels, & spy films & TV, wane into obscurity? Do "Mission: Impossible" & "Get Smart" never happen? Does "24" never happen?:eek:

Does Ian Fleming die broke?

Given that the books of Fleming often have little to do with the movies, perhaps Quiller with more gadgets and flair. I think part of the James Bond allure is that almost every guy wants that lifestyle. A quiet spy who lays low, uses his head to solve mysteries, and disarms his opponents through martial arts might not be as alluring. Maybe you get 3-6 films but not the plethora of James Bond films.

Maybe the Bourne books become more popular instead?

How could Bourne be any less Popular. All three of the Books were best sellers. There was a TV mini series.
And then in the 2000's there were a spin off series of books, most of which also were New York Time Best Sellers.
And there have been 4 movies, that are similar to the Bond Books in that often other then the Titles, the movies have had little with the Books.

One of the adages to aspiring writers is 'write what you know'. Now, it is true that Bond has very little relationship to the spy world Fleming had been employed in, but i dont know if hed be intetested in other genres.

Otoh, there was a thread sometime back about Ian Fleming and Roald Dahl having their careersinterchanged.

IDK about this, tho. Think Jack Bauer, with more Chuck Norris & a bigger budget.:cool: Or, yes, an early Jason Bourne, without the amnesia.

That's just it. Bond bore no relationship to Fleming's reality. His reality in sigint was more cypher clerk: Jack Ryan, without the gunfire. That can be interesting, if done well--but doing it well is damnably hard. That being so, a detective (which Bond could as easily be) makes sense. He could've been MI-5, instead...

First Bourne book was published *in 1980*, first movie was about 20-25 years later. Make the books even more popular and you could get a movie by 1990.

There was IIRC a TVM (2-part minseries?) in about '81. It evidently didn't do well enough to attract a sequel...
