BTW what do you mean exactly about the British military? RN or army? And what type of numbers - soldiers, sailors, ships? Or just those in the UK? Or the Indian army? Or others on empire garrison duty? Or colonial militias?

Forgiveable if it was just a slip of the tongue. But it often irritates me when people mix them up, especially in the 19th century era...
 
I've just done some digging around &, alas, it looks like regiments.org is dead. Gone for good. Which is a great shame because it was an excellent reference site for information such as required for this thread. :(
