Brussel 1618
Here I am sitting at my desk at my newly decorated court in Brussels. Tired but sattisfied of my accomlisments.
It was a fine day this day, the cherry on top of the pie, so to speak, a day which will be noted by future historians.
But it did not come for nothing, for the same reason I could end up as this William of Orange Nassau, losing his land, his faith and at the end his life.
No the day I left my King was the best decision of my life.
After the tragic events with the Armada my King wanted to spiol my fine army in France, while was not finished in the Netherlands. At that piont I knew my King was confusing state matters with spirital matters.
In 1586 after I pacified most of this land with a combination of brute force and smart politics and after the epic siege of Antwerp. I offered my king to conquer England for him and burn this Heretic Queen of them. I could do it in one swift channel crossing with good winds, landing my troops before their fleet couldreach me, but he refuesed. Later he came back with almost the sam idea, given by the God he wrote me, the same paln only rediculous complicated. After I saws our fine ships panicing for a few burners, fleeing North, I knew our changes were lost. Then some maniac killed Henry the III in France and my King wanted to battle the herretic Henry of Navarre, just before I made up a strategy to in invade Holland and Zeeland, the last remainders of this rebelious province.
I refused, I informed my most trust worthy comanders and I removed the ones I could not trus.
The Stategy worked, as I thought after a difficult siege of Utrecht, the cowards of Amsterdam opened their city gates without a shot. After that almost al of the cities surrendered after therms. Only Zeeland gave me some bad sleep. On the otherhand I am not Alva, if people want to read the Bible so be it, times changes and I do not want to shear my power with some corrupt and fat bishops.
I had to made some concessions, instead of bisshops I have a Estate General who ruins some times my mood. But I had to do something, when I finnished my job. Phillips II thought he could sent me home after all my efford. He had to sen an army to get me way. Which he did, to bad my fine tercios were done with them after only 3 hours on the fields out side Arras.
FOr my own joy I anexed Gullick, Kleve, Cologne, and East Friesland, just to have a buffer against the comming storms . Wtih this I understand that William of Orange lost his cause, what a penny pickkers are thos memebers of the Estates. Always wanted to diband my fine Tercios. You buid a cannal, the Fossa Margaretha, linking the Rhine and the Muese and they compain of losing trade in Holland,it is good for the cities of Brabant.
But now it is quiet, Holland is focused on the Baltic trade and the East, cities of Flandres and Zeeland are making good fortune in the New world.
With France I do not have much problems, yet. How ever this Medici woman....
My new court in Brussels is still smelling fresh of paint and lime stone.
I hope my son Ranuccio will rulle this stubborn people as I did, let them alone in their small quarrels keep oreder and make sure their merchants and entrepenours will fill your coffins.
It was a fine day this day, even I see dark clouds as the sun goes down.
Who kowns what that will bring.
