Hypothetical different WWI Alliances?

How would this work out?

Britain, Germany, A-H, Spain, Portugal, Japan and the Ottomans

vs.

France, Russia, USA, Serbia, Italy

Near ASB, but we'll say the war breaks out as it does historically, with the assassination of an Austrian royal by a Serb nationalist in the summer of 1914. Let's also say that due to butterflies somewhere or other (Spanish/American war?), the U.S is not isolationist, and has been an active French ally, and has engaged in a naval race with Britain.

Firstly, how do these alliances form? And secondly, how would the war unfold, assuming it does start as I predicted?

You should probably have Japan switch sides as they were already allied with Britain and hostile too Russia and the US.

Personally, I would say that this would be a close run thing, it really depends on how much pressure the US fleet can make on the Royal Navy, though given that the Japanese will be attacking them in the Pacific the situation in the Atlantic will probably be in the UK's favour.

In addition, with no blockade of her ports, Germany will almost cirtainly be able to win the land war even if Britain doesn't get too involved in the European war, the Marne (or whatever replaces it) will almost definitely go Germany's way leaving only Russia to stand in the way of a German dominated Europe. The US may well decide to sue for peace before even committing land forces to be honest, she would have too much to lose for too little potential reward.

whats the POD? If you want to make America non Isolationist you need a President TR or a POD going back a good 50 years. Besides it is a well known fact that the English hated their "Cousin Willy" don't forget the family dynamic. if we are just spitballing, I can only see this working as a Democracy vs. Monarchy thing. but then what do you do with Russia? have Alexander live and modernize/"liberalize" the country?

I've no idea what the POD could be, not being a modern history expert, but I'd suspect it'd be somewhere in the mid 1890s, and open alliances emerging in 1898. Let's say France goes to war with Britain over Fashoda, and gets its ass handed to it, losing its south east Asian colonies, and some of its African empire. Meanwhile, the U.S/Spanish war goes much worse for America, because Germany has decided (why? not sure?) to support Spain. Victory for the Americans takes a good 18 months, rather than it just being a walk over. America thus becomes very anti-German and aligns with France, against Germany and Britain. Italy joins with the Franco-U.S-Russian alliance when Britain denies its colonial ambitions in Turkish Albania and Libya, and the Ottomans line up with the Germanic powers when they allow Turkey to retain Macedonia and Albania.

Probably ASB, but still, how does the war go?
