What if the ottomans decided to make the territories of hungary that they ruled a christian vassal like transylvania and the romanians? Maybe a calvinist hungary as I read they were the mayority of the population during ottoman rule.
I mean making it a vassal after a few decades of direct rule, maybe because they decide it isnt worte it? Maybe they gave the land to theier vassal of transylvanania, who I believe was ruled by an hungarian that claimed the throne of hungary? So maybe, in order to reinforce that claim, the ottomans decided to pass him the land of central hungary, and seeing that most of his subjects are calvinist this ottoman vassal decides to convert? It also further strengthen his position in humgary against the hapsburg. It would be totally ideal. No expensive and destabilising border wars in the far North(-West). A buffer between the Ottomans and Germans. The problem is... would it turn Calvinist if the Ottomans do not rule Central Hungary directly? It may or may not. It could go either way. To make Hungary weaker Croatia definitely needs to be severed from Hungary. Already apart from Hungary as a different Kingdom. It may be a vassal like Serbia used to be. Transylvania is optional but not wise to do so otherwise Hungary gets too weak to confront the Habsburg Powers.
But everybody benefits from it. Maybe Austria less but still. Hungary is prevented from the Austro-Turkish Wars in Central and Northern Hungary depopulating the region. Hungary can develop like the Czechs and closely resemble the German states. If it turns Calvinist then Hungary is pretty much saved from possible Austrian Rule.
The Ottomans can focus elsewhere. Possibly Persia or Italy.

They kind of did, they backed Janos Zapolya. However, the Ottomans could not really do anything when he agreed to relinquish his claim to the throne of Hungary leaving him as Prince of Transylvania, and I don't know if there are any solid POD's for him to reconsider unless it is having a son.

Yeah, but I tought that maybe calvinist rule in hungery (remember that austria is the catholic enforcer of central europe) could consolidate ottoman suzerainty. Not really seeing it happen after direct rule even though it still looks ideal. Unless Austria is defeated the option to let Hungary rule itself is pretty much dangerous.
