In my last thread (you can check it here) someone said that the Franks claiming to be the sucessors of the Roman empire would be like if the Hungarians had expanded into Greece and taken Constantinople and declares themselves a new roman empire

Let's say that for some reason....Maybe they convince the Pope that they can mend the great schism by taking over the byzantine empire and so they are greenlighted to do so, the Hungarians advance through Croatia and Bulgaria and seize the byzantine territory BEFORE the sack of Constantinople, and somehow they win and declare themselves to be a new Roman empire

What would happen under such byzarre circunstances?

All I gotta say is good luck with trying to get Hungary to conquer Byzantium. Unlike in CKII, Byzantium could handedly defeat anyone who dared invade its lands. Even the Sejluk lands were absolutely massive.

The Venetians say hello.

Such a conquest, realistically speaking, would be most likely during the chaos of a post-1204 Crusade- Medieval Hungary had the severe misfortune of being wedged between the Ottonian HRE, and the edge of the Eurasian Steppe; without first the Mongols and then the Turks grinding the kingdom down into powder it's exceedingly likely that they would have come to dominate the Danube basin, from Moravia to Wallachia and possibly beyond.

In a scenario where, for instance, Louis the Great manages to hold onto both Poland and Naples for his family (though they will probably be split off to cadet lines) then I could see such a state exploiting first the Hussite Wars and then a successful Crusade of Varna to secure first Bohemia and then Greece, Albania and Bulgaria. Naples crucially gives a dynastic claim to the old Latin Empire, as well as Albania and Jerusalem, and if they "liberate" the Balkans from the Turks then I could see them claiming the Imperial crown... especially since, depending on the butterflies, the king of Hungary might already have the Holy Roman crown!

The issue is that why would the Hungarians wanna go out and try to claim the title of Roman Empire that late? The Latin Empire, for example, seemed to overall exist with an understanding that it was a successor to the Byzantine Empire, rather than the Roman Empire? IMO by the time the Fourth Crusade rolled around, the concept of truly restoring the Roman Empire was buried. Plus, good luck getting the Pope to recognize a "new Roman Emperor" in the east right at the time when the Protestant Reformation was just about to begin. A Protestant Rome would be a huge blow to Catholic power. The Pope is more likely to demand the title for himself, if he even chooses to grant it at all.

The empire under the Angelois was run horribly. The fact that 1203 happened wasn't a coincidence.
