Humphey wins 68, how big of a difference does it make?

In otl Nixon's 68 margin was not huge.

Suppose Agnew's criminality came out in October 68, or even more the dubious actions of though around him in undermining Vietnamese negotiations.

How much difference does that make?

This might very well cause us to get out of Vietnam earlier as well as to avoid bombing Cambodia.

Also, it would make a huge difference in regards to the U.S. Supreme Court; indeed, several appointments had to be made for the U.S. Supreme Court between 1969 and 1973.

Plus the people who were victims of the Bengali genocide in 1971 (persons living in what was then East Pakistan).

The hard interpretation is that we said A Okay to the West Pakistanis who perpetuated the genocide because they were cold war "allies", and fuck everything else. The more charitable interpretation is that we didn't lean on the West Pakistanis as hard as we might have.

*Most genocide occurs in slow motion and only is clear in retrospect. A lot of it involved manipulating already existing famine, as I think this one did.

*Democrats are often no better on foreign policy.

. . . undermining Vietnamese negotiations. . .
and from Haldeman's notes which came out last December, Nixon was asking those around him to undermine the peace talks.

If Humphrey can keep himself to only being medium angry about this, he might be effective.

And if he skillfully plays the situation and has an U.S. official privately embarrass South Vietnam President Nguyen Van Thieu to a medium extent, then he in turn might be open to some constructive changes. If Thieu is too embarrassed, probably not. It's a peculiar thing about human nature.
