Huckabee in 2012

Huckabee was considered a contender and quite a strong one, for the 2012 GOP nomination. What would have happened if he did run for President?

He could be the conservative who loses to Romney.

Maybe. All the other 'alternatives to Romney' burnt out fairly fast, although Saintorum did have his brief moment of glory in Iowa. If Huckabee timed his run just right and got lucky, he might have edged Mittens here and there. However, I think that in November Obama would have absolutely walloped him. :D

I agree. Romney was the only candidate (outside of Huntsman who was too moderate to win the nomination) who had a chance at beating Obama. The rest were too fringe to win.

I flipped all Romney's close states (Arizona, North Carolina, Georgia, Missouri, and Nebraska's 2nd district) plus Indiana.

It would not be competitive if he was the nominee. Social issues would rule the day.

Huckabee, economically speaking, at least, is not all that far away from the Democrats on many issues. He would be VERY popular with boomers and the elderly but would just get killed with young voters.

I think he seriously could have beaten Romney.

I disagree. You can't win the Republican nomination with religious conservatives alone. There is a reason Huckabee didn't win in 2008 and Santorum (who despite his Catholicism appealed more to evangelicals than Catholics) didn't win in 2012.
