Hua Guofeng's China

Suppose that Deng Xiaoping failed to overthrow Hua Guofeng in the late 1970s? How would China develop under Guofeng? What about Sino-Soviet relations?

It seems like Deng's still around and I can't imagine Hua managing to keep Deng from power.

Can you give a different POD rather than Hua just stopping Deng.

Well, the Gang of Four purged and relieved Deng Xiaoping from his posts and Hua Guofeng pardoned him. Let's say Hua Guofeng doesn't pardon him, is that better POD?

Not really, by the time Mao died, I would say it's almost a matter of time before Deng got power again with or without that pardon by Hua.

Alright, let's just assume that Xiaoping never comes to power in China and Guofeng remains in power, how would China turn out?

Well as I recall, Hua's idea of the "Four Modernizations" involved importing a whole lot of foreign technology and machinery, and wasn't as decentralized and home-grown as Deng's policy (township-village enterprises, etc.) so perhaps China wouldn't be in as strong of a position as it is today, and foreign companies would in many cases have the upper hand.
