HRE-like Angevin Empire?

Hey Guys,

I was wondering if it's at all plausible to have made the Angevin Empire into something like the Holy Roman Empire, as in one central Emperor that's elected by various other Kings, Archbishops, Princes etc within the Empire.

P.s. Before you get all uppity I realise that the term 'Angevin Empire' is merely a modern name for the territories at the time.

Difficult - you have to weaken both the English and French crowns at the same time.
Perhaps a successful merger of the French & English crowns for 3 generations followed by a massively disputed succession and you could get an elected approach as a solution.
Though you also have to avoid the electee gaining enough power to rid himself of the other claimants.

Actually, the structure we today call AE is very much built upon the idea of a strong king - and the desire of the Plantagenets to become French kings. One should keep in mind that England was only a secondary object of their rivalry with the Capetians, and finally, their consolation prize.

It's hard to see a reason why they should put their throne - disregarding over which territories they rule - up to an election. Either they manage to win through, or they will lose against the competing dynasty.

I can see one way how your plant might have come true: One Plantagenet might have bought a number of powerful nobles' support for letting them elect his successor. I doubt, however, if the winner of that election would have been able to materialize his claims - unless he's the past king's heir anyway.
