How to make World War One worse?

I'm trying to write a timeline where World War One is worse for all participants. Britain ends up half starved and radicalised, and France and Germany are so ruined they have to establish an earlier EEC to survive.

What I want to see long run is a United(ish) EEC in the forties and an extremist right wing collectivist/fascist Britain. Maybe even an Anglo-Soviet alliance against the "Reactionary" Europeans in the 40s...

Wouldn't Britain have to be far-left in order to be in the same pact as the Soviet Union? I can't see a far-right Britain siding with the Soviets against a reactionary Europe, I'd think they'd try to get the Soviets beaten off first before getting Europe to turn on each other.

As for making WWI worse, PoDs would have to be made to make the German Navy do better in the North Sea and the blockade of Britain, and the supporting of rebellion on the island itself (like they did IOTL to Russia).

- The US don't enter the war so no unsecured loan for the Entente.
- Some Germans military blunder to compensate this
- Maybe a full civil war in Austria-Hungary
- more succesfull submarine warfare
- Irish revolution

I think if the far right went with a less anti Communist kind of *fascism (like Strasserism) we could see an alliance with the Stalinist Soviet Union.

How could we get an AH Civil War come about?

The British at the time would have allied with almost anyone in order to prevent a united continent. An alliance of convenience to be sure, but a unified Franco German state is a far greater threat to Britain than far off, and navally insignificant, Russia.

Have the German 1918 offensives succeed. That would be the start of a longer war.

Oh, I know that regular Britain would've and did ally with the USSR against Germany and (technically) France. A longer war involving an Anglo-Soviet alliance against the Axis is actually one of my favourite pet scenarios. I'm saying that a fascist Britain would not deal with the Soviets any more than they need to (I assumed the OP referred to a friendly, sincere alliance rather than the pure pragmatic move the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact was).

1) The Russians and Ottomans make a separate peace in November 1916 ending the blockade of Russia. This boosts morale in Russia to butterfly away the Revolution

2) The Americans refuse to join the war because of their distinct distaste of the Russian government

3) Unrestricted Submarine Warfare cripples the British industry and the German advances of 1918 make good progress but not enough to end the war as continued Russian pressure weakens the German effort

4) Spanish flu epidemic spreads misery as it kills millions

5) There is a mutation of the Spanish flu that spreads to horses leading to a massive die off as the animals are already weakened by poor diet and overwork

6) The war continues into 1920 but anarchy begins to rage as food becomes scare throughout the continent due to lack of drafts and the inability to import due to USW

7) Allies near victory until the Swedes intervene to prevent a Russian victory restoring the CP position.

8) Uprising in India forces the British to divert troops preventing an offensive in 1922. Millions die as the transport system on the subcontinent is destroyed. Ethnic warfare breaks out as the various princes assert independence

9) Japan launches brutal invasion of China that progesses then stalls. The destruction of the Chinese economy rivals that of World War II and the Warlord era. Various Chinese Generals fight each other as well as the Japanese

Feel free to rearrange things but that's an outline

Front lines slowly shift back and forth over hundreds of miles, devastating all of Belgium, Flanders, Alsace, Lorraine, the Rhine River Valley, etc.

Fighting on the Austro-Italian front extends down into the Northern Italian Plain. Thousands of Italian buildings are flattened.
Then the Austro-Italian Front creeps northwards and a few Austrian a allies are reduced to rubble.

On the Turkish Front, Ottoman cavalry launch reprisals, slaughtering most of the Arabs who oppose them. The House of Saud suffers crippling casualties. Turkish troops ransack Mecca and roll the holy meteor into the Red Sea.

Ukranian Cossacks gain the upper hand on the Eastern Front, settling scores with Finns, Moskovites, Belarus, Moldovans, Rumanians, Poles, Jews, etc.

With no clear winner, Europe descends into anarchy.

The German use of Zeppelins in even greater numbers against more British non-military targets, cities in particular. And not just London and costal ports as happened. In addition, the use of mustard gas against these targets too.

The British retaliate against Berlin, Hamburg, Dusseldorf, etc. in a similar vein. Civilian casualties mount up.....
