How to have Britain gain Hawaii?

Through the research I've gathered, I believe that either Kamehameha's cession to Vancouver would have to materialize or Kamehameha IV (Alexander Liholiho) would in some way lend the islands under British influence, but perhaps it could've never happened, what do you think?

I don't think Kamehameha would have ceded anything willingly, but if a deal with Great Britain was framed to him as an alliance, I could definitely see him taking them up on it. This might prompt British rather than American missionaries to arrive to Hawaii, and while these families would still create a base of white settlers, it would be one that sees the monarchy in a more friendly light and would probably be willing to keep it on the throne, resulting in a powerful political force to promote Hawaiian autonomy despite the (likely) loss of full Hawaiian sovereignty to Great Britain.

Also the UK is far less interested in permanently annexing Hawaii than USA, they would want the port, yes, but the land is too far away from the British mainland and the crown doesn't care for gaining land for Canada or Australia.

So the most likely end result would be an independent Kingdom of Hawaii with a native monarch which is part of the commonwealth? Makes sense.

I mean, hypothetically the British could have outright seized the islands any time they wanted and practically speaking no one could have said boo.

However, on a political/economic level it doesn't make too much sense. The only people it could be aimed at would be the US, and it would mean investing resources in the island which might not pay off.

The only real window IMO for Hawaii to come into the British sphere is if Kamehameha IV lives longer and sets his more pro-British policies into practice which might lead to Hawaii being a protectorate of the islands.
