How to get two women to run a country consecutively without falling into ASB

Good morning. I'm writing an Alternative Story, but I have some doubts. I want two women to govern (from different parties) a country for about 12 or 16 years, one example: that each one govern the periods 2000-2008 and 2008-2016.

But I'd like some advice on how to do it without falling into ASB. How can you get 2 women to govern as Head of State and Government? they can use America as the country where they would rule.

What effects could 16 years of women's rule have? What does it take to make it happen?

It's not even close to ASB, frankly. Like yes, sexism is obviously a thing, but any competent-enough woman could win the presidency given enough effort. Two in a row doesn't seem at all remarkable, that kept in mind. And as for whether a woman being president would change politics at all -- well, ask Maggie Thatcher Milk Snatcher. :p

This is OTL - Jenny Shipley was PM of New Zealand from 1997 until 1999, when Helen Clark took over until 2008. The term lengths combined almost match what you specify, so it's hardly ASB.

McCain wins, but has significant illness shortly thereafter.

Hillary Clinton defeats Sarah Palin, has a boring undifferentiated term with mediocre outcomes at home and abroad, and the American public decides against changing horses in midstream.

Thatcher got 11+ years in power in the UK, so you just need a female labor politician to take the place of Tony Blair as the Third Way Centrist in the 90s

There was a prime minister between Thatcher and blair you know. Sure he was boring but I mean come on John major was pm for 7 years

New Zealand almost works:

1 Jenny Shipley, PM 1997-99, for National Party (right wing)
2 Helen Clark, PM 1999-08, for Labour Party (right wing)

Basically about 11 years of female leadership of government under HRH Elizabeth II

The scenario you propose isn't ASB, it isn't even borderline ASB. I can come up with at least a dozen ways this could be done in the US alone :p

I have a feeling that a woman president in America will operate in large part to how we had our first Catholic President. Itll be tough for the first one, but once they're elected it wont be a big deal anymore.

What you propose is easily accomplished especially now in the 21st century

America’s only had one catholic president so I don’t think that’s a good analogy

This isn't even close to ASB. For some reason, [1] GW Bush isn't available in 2000. So instead we get eight years of Liddy Dole (2000-2008) followed by eight years of Hillary Clinton (2008-2016).

[1] For example, maybe Clayton Williams avoids rape jokes and wins the governorship in 1990. Neither GW Bush nor any other important Republican is likely to challenge him when he seeks re-election in 1994.

What I meant by that is if a Catholic were to run now it wouldnt be broadcast as a big deal. We've had 3 vice presidential nominees since JFK who've een Catholic if i recall. And RFK didnt have nearly as big a problem presented to him for his Catholicism

Easily achievable in Lithuania.

Kazimiera Prunskienė 2004-2009
Dalia Grybauskaitė 2009-2019

And if you want female PMs during that time as well, have someone like Degutienė or Šimonytė appointed as Conservative PM in 2008 for whatever reason, and either they win a second term (somehow) or the Socdem coalition in 2012 chooses Loreta Graužinienė as compromise PM.

Head of government and head of state? That eliminates any country with parliamentary government, where the head of state and head of government are different.

If you don't require head of state as well as of government, it's already happened.

Since 1991, the elected Prime Minister of Bangladesh has been a woman: either Khaleda Zia (Bangladesh Nationalist Party) or Sheikh Hasina (Awami League). (Bangladesh also has had interim PMs - called "Chief Adviser" - who governed from when an election was called until the new government was formed. These interim PMs have usually governed for about three months, but in one case for two years.)
