How to enlarge Switzerland?

Hiya everyone! As my first post and question on this forum, I'm going to ask something that's intrigued me for quite a while. How could Switzerland be plausibly enlarged after 1900? I've read about Vorarlberg voting to join Switzerland after WWI, and parts of Swabia proposing to join Switzerland after WWII, but it doesn't appear like there was much support for either proposal by the Swiss themselves, as well as the winners of the two wars. What would be required for the Swiss to be able to get some new cantons? Any other interesting opportunities, perhaps?

Same way they got Geneva after the Napoleonic Wars, most likely.
  • Attacked by the Central Powers in WWI
  • Attacked by the Entente in WWI
  • Attacked by the Axis in WWII
However, how much land they can obtain in such a case is up to debate. Most likely, border changes would be minor to remove enclaves belonging to the defeated side (Büsingen am Hochrhein for Germany, Campione d'Italia for Italy), and Vorarlberg in WWI, possibly. Other than that though, it's hard to see them getting more. I'm not even sure what they could get from the French in the case of an WWI Entente invasion and defeat.

There is my opinion about maximum expansion:

- After WW1 Vorarlberg decides join to Switzerland and the country accepts that.
- In Liechtenstain Royal house is ousted and it joins to Switzerland.
- Hitler and Mussolini are even nutter than in OTL and they invade to Switzerland. Switzerland gains some areas from Germany and Aosta from Italy.

Not sure of the POD, but might be cool if Switzerland gained a seaport.

I think the Axis and Central Powers would be stupid to try to invade.

I don't think that CPs would try invade Switzerland. Why they would?

Axis could be enough stupid to try that.

The only way I could see Switzerland getting a seaport is if they had a strip of land to act as a buffer between Italy and France, which would be a bizarre event that would probably need a pre-1900 PoD.

More likely is Switzerland getting guaranteed access to an Italian port like Genoa in a similar manner that Bolivia is guaranteed access to a Chilean port or two.

Switzerland had an America's Cup entry didn't they? They just completed a 50 km railway tunnel, maybe they could tunnel under Italy, bring the tunnel to the surface out to sea, and build a sea port outside the 12 mile limit?

It might be possible for Liechtenstein to join even without the princely family ousted. If the prince ever found it in his interests to join Switzerland, Liechtenstein could end up as a special canton, with the royal family assured a place in the federal council. Unorthodox, but they're already tied to Switzerland in a lot of ways.

If the Grisons manage to keep their hold on the Valtellina region, which was under their control since around the 18th century, then Switzerland might be able to incorporate it. In our timeline, it was separated by the French and transferred to the Cisalpine Republic in 1798.

If that doesn't happen, you get a Switzerland with a higher proportion of Italian speaking people.

You could probably get this put to a referendum....
