I've read some arguments on this board in the past that Ottoman conquest of Persia, that whole big Iranian plateau, would be a stretch and is probably implausible. What about a more limited conquest, of northwest Persia and the southern shores of the Caspian? This probably involves conquest of Tabriz and Tehran, but not Isfahan. How doable? Bonus points if it can be held till late 19th century or early 20th century.

I would say that if the Ottomans avoid pushing further north up the Caucasus that they could potentially hold it until roughly the early 18th century and possibly a bit longer. With the way things were going with the Ottomans in OTL I am not sure how they could hold that territory into the 19th or the 20th century. I know that Iran and Russia were on good terms with one another for quite a while. Other than that, my knowledge is limited I'm afraid.

You could find a POD that prevents the rise of the Safavids altogether leaving Iran much more open to Ottoman conquest.

Hmmm. Perhaps a different Treaty of Constantinople where Russia gets Georgia and Azerbaijan and the Ottomans take much of the Caspian coast?Problem is, I don't know if they had the power to hold onto it for more than a few decades at most.

The Treaty of Constantinople in 1700? There were quite a few from what I have seen...

1724. They attempted to divide up Iranian lands between them. But both Russia and the Ottomans lost all their gains soon after. I think the Safavids would need to collapse somehow.

The Safavids did collapse. The problem for the Russians and Ottomans was the brief rise of Afsharid power in Iran. With a different Treaty of Constantinople and an early death of Nader Shah, the Ottomans could conceivably hold Azerbaijan, though Mazandaran might be a bit more difficult.

What if there were some truth in the legend that he and his mother were carried off into slavery in 1704? If he doesn't escape slavery, then that may have a similar affect as an early death.
