While Washington established an "unwritten rule" as we view it today, before FDR many presidents did not run for a third term because they were tired of the job or did not believe they could win reelection. Could a very popular President run for a third term and win? Or would people be so afraid of dictatorship that they would desert him for the other party (since policy differences during this era were minimal).
Theodore Roosevelt is often thought of as having run for a third term in 1912, however it would have been his second full term and not his third. The issue was that he claimed he would not run again after 1908.
Is a third term run possible during this era? It is my understanding FDR only was able to do it because the country was still in such a deep crisis.
