Right before and immediately after Hitler took power in 1933 the Reichswehr was subjected to purges of people that either would not work with the Nazis or were objectionable to them (liberals, Jews, anti-Nazis) to make it politically pliable for Hitler. Von Blomberg, the handpicked War Minister put in charge prior to Hitler's appointment as Chancellor by the Hindenburg clique to make the military subservient to the new government, was purging the officer corps too quickly even for the Nazi's liking because it was undermining efficiency and the planned expansion of the military. How much did the purges of the German military really undermine it's ability to function and had the purges not happened due to the Nazis never rising, would the Reichswehr have been even better than the Wehrmacht? The military in general was more conservative than German society as a whole and the purges/self exile of liberals, Jews, and anti-Nazis in general hurt German society significantly. In an ATL where Germany weathers the storm of the Depression and doesn't go Militarist, Fascist, or Nazi would the military then have been a more effective instrument than the OTL one under Hitler?
