I have been able to find some GDP growth figures from 1970 onwards.
1971: 3.3 %
1972: 5.3 %
1973: 5.7 %
1974: -0.52 %
1975: -0.2%
1976: 5.4 %
1977: 4.6 %
1978: 5.6%
1979: 3.2 %
1980: -0.24
The figures are interesting because they demonstrate a tremendous economic growth in 1972-1973, a result of Nixon's reflationary measures. However using these statistics is flawed because they are in constant dollars, and do not represent the impact of inflation, as in real dollars the economy will contract if it grows at 3% yet inflation runs at 4%
Inflation ran high during the 1970s, and the average inflation rates demonstrate this
1970:5.7%
1971:4.4%
1972:3.2%
1973:6.2%
1974:11.0%
1975:9.1%
1976:5.8%
1977:6.5%
1978:7.6%
1979:11.3%
1980:13.5%
In 1976 Nixon would be forced to run in an election dominated by the poor economy. Domestic affairs were not Nixon's strong suit. What's more Nixon's record is likely to mean that he would be unwilling to cary out a deflationary policy during 1974-1975 or 1980. This means that not only is inflation likely to be higher, but the recessions would probably be worse. This means that if Nixon overcomes the challenge of 1976, he would find it very very difficult to win in 1980
