How many Popes?

At the height of the Western Schism, there was, as many know, a French Pope and a Roman Pope. Something I wasn't aware of until a few minutes ago, however, was that there was also an Antipope in Pisa.

The questions are:

1) How many Popes can we get at once?

2) How long can these Papacies last separately before collapsing or becoming a separate Christian sect?

3) What is the effect of so many Popes?

In a really vague, non-TL answer, you could theoretically achieve a situation where there would be one "pope" for each country. Combine the reformation with the emergence of some kind of proto-nationalism, in a similar way to the Hussites and Bohemia ... and Henry VIII and the Church of England ... and we'd be back in a situation where temporal and spiritual authority overlap. No seperation of powers; no "modernity"; and a very different model of the *Westphalian nation-state.
