If a full nuclear exchange occurred between 1983 and 1989 how many nuclear weapons would be used against China (by the US and the USSR) and how many would die as a result of the weapons and the ensuing chaos and breakdown of society?

Going by the number of IRBM/MRBMs the USSR had in range of China at any one time (plus nuclear bombs and cruise missiles) I think it’s plausible that around 500 nuclear weapons would be used against China in the event of an 1980s war. This isn’t including any American nuclear weapons that may be used as well.

In this detailed timeline of a full nuclear exchange in 1988 China gets hit with 900 nuclear weapons by the USSR with 100 million deaths.

not sure if there'd be any blast in China. china was pretty neutral by the 80s. maybe 300 weapons. in the 60s Mao had sort of pushed for Kruschev to take a hardline w idea that China would win just by surviving when US and USSR wiped each other out; and in late 60s early 70s there were skirmishes with USSR in Siberia/Manchuria. But by 80s things had settled down. Deng just wanted to stabilize things and increase production. Vietnam was a border skirmish, limited objectives; and trying to take Taiwan was/is suicidal.

still even with no direct hits on china, fallout and nuclear winter would've killed millions in china
