How important was Belguim to Britain

Suppose Britain still does the Entente cordial but Germany and France had different strategies

Germany decided to be defensive in the West and France had an Schliefen equivalant?

How would Britain have reacted?

Whitehall lodges a protest. I think as long as the French promise to withdraw they won't do much more than that.

Britain protests and extracts a comitment from France to be out of Belgium by the end of the month. If French troops behave and Belgian troops stand asside that should be the end of it. If however there are incidents with civilians and or French and Belgian forces clash then like it or not Britain will sever relations with France.

Britains best bet for this situation would be to play peacemaker backed up with the threat of naval action should any of the warring parties be reluctant to come to the conference table.
