How hard would invading Japan be if populace is unarmed and passive and soldiers not fight to death?

Relatively easy, a Japanese for short on supplies ,ammunition, machine guns and artillery and would be suffering a severe morale problem.
The civilian population could be pacified with food.

And the city of Leningrad where cannibalism happened and starvation was frequent saw surrenders for food. Basically the reason Japan surrendered was because the Emperor saw atomic weapons as giving the Americans the opportunity to destroy Japan without the need to spend lots of US lives fighting on the ground. The strategy of bleeding the "weak" Americans was thus completely negated, even if you really believed that was going to work. IMHO unless and until Hirohito sees the choice as ending the fighting vs total destruction of Japan and Japanese culture AND he is a position to make such a decision stick (not obvious given OTL plots) starvation or not most of the population and military will fight on. Yes morale will suffer, but simply as long as the Emperor is calling for continued sacrifice, the vast majority will do so. Certainly OLYMPIC/CORONET will eventually cause a conventional military situation where the post A-bomb decision would be made, but it won't be soon.

Given that use of atomics was a key part of OLYMPIC/CORONET, the decision had been made.
