Based off of an article I read that Nixon tried to assassinate a journalist with LSD. I wonder if Nixon was a little bit more paranoid, how much could he do and still successfully cover it up?
Slow Burn touched on this a few times. It left me surprised that Nixon didn't just have an "accidental" electrical fire destroy the tapes to muddy the waters. Obviously, as we get get further into Watergate, this gets less feasible, but it's kind of shocking they didn't at least try this once they realized they were going to have to hand the tapes over.
I doubt this changes much, as it would constitute obstruction of Justice. Once it is known that there was a taking system, that Nixon and other officials were discussing Watergate (and other relevant matters) in meetings that were taped, and that Nixon burned those tapes the House would move to impeach Nixon and he is still forced to leave before his term expires.
