How early could hamsters be domesticated?

Asking the questions that really matter.

Anyways, yeah probably. Would have to be popular in the upper classes of Europe to really happen.

Believe it or not, hamsters were only domesticated in 1939. Could they have been domesticated earlier?

They're not really domesticated, they're simply kept in captivity. It's also a unusual worthless animals to be kept in captivity, pretty much only useful for laboratory use.

Hamster is not really practical animal when you get from that few of meat and you need many hamsters before you get even one children's glove. And I haven't ever understand point keep them as pets. They live something like 3 - 4 years and if they escape, it is pretty much good bye speciality if yu have cat on same house.o

Maybe they could be bred on ships to provide some meat on long sea voyages

You would need much of food for hamsters and hamsters are not so great food source. They whould be nundreds of hamsters on ship that crew would get enough of food. There is much better options. And are hamsters even tasteful?

On Peru they eat them, along with Guinea Pigs.
