How do you stop China becoming Communist?.

Maybe the left wing of kmt wins power struggle, Wang dosent go to the far right and defect to Japan and Chiangmai never takes power.

How do you stop China becoming Communist?.

And how would that change the dynamics of the Cold War?.
Way too many PoDs gives you that, the Communists as of 1929 or so looked to be a lost cause

1) Chiang purges more effectively in 1927: the CCP are even more wiped out than otl, doesn't have enough leadership to rebuild in rural areas
2) The Communists don't adapt: it's quite possible the Communists don't go the mao peasant guerrilla focused route and follows a lot of the Moscow-trained Communist's idea of building Soviet states in indefensible areas: gets wiped out in the 1930s
3) The Japanese don't invade: Chiang wipes them out in Ya'an by the mid-late 40s

If Japan had not invaded, I feel that the Republic could have defeated the People's Republic. The Nationalists may well have been able to gain western support, such as the French hoping to keep hold of Indo-China and the British wanting to protect their influence in the region, such as Burma and Malaya. It's possible that colonial powers would have wanted to estend their imperium, such as an expansion of Indo-China or the British Raj, which would engulf the land that the PRC now holds. This is highly unlikely, as the Japanese Empire would be highly unlikely to avoid war with the Chinese states.

Historically. The PRC did a great job liquidating communist workers and intellectuals and destroying the social and economic preconditions for communism.

It is a lot harder to make the PRC communist. Zhou Enlai as a socialist humanist leader might be a good start.

As far as making the PRC not controlled by the CCP others have spoken.

But let me give you a twofer and give you a non-CCP communist China: Tiananmen as China's 1956 succeeds and a coalition of old intellectuals, old workers and students runs China through workers councils.

Yours,
Sam R.

Prevent the Xi'an Incident in 1936. Before Xi'an, KMT's strategy to eliminate the internal enemy before going against Japan worked well, and the Nationalist Army was about to eliminate the Commies completely within a few months. If Chang Hsueh-liang and Yang Hucheng did not stage the coup, the CCP should have been finished by March 1937. However, in such a scenario, it would have been more likely that the Soviets would have propped up the left wing Northeast Anti-Japanese United Army instead, and as a result there may have been a post-War Communist Manchuria. May not be what the OP wants.
