How do you Make Base Maps?

Do you just take a map of the region and mark out pixels to represent borders and coastlines and such, or is there an easier way?

go to Google Images and type in "Map of X" and then choose the best match for what yo want. Or check out the blank map thread.

I meant more along the lines of "How were the maps in the Blank Map Thread made?"

I go to OMC, paste together the maps i get from there, and white out all the ugly yellow.

The last one i made, i downloaded the OMC maps both with and without rivers so that i could use rivers as boundaries, but the map wouldn't be cluttered with all the non-boundary rivers.
