How did the men on the extrem flank feel?

Is there any good accounts by men who served in a conflict pre 1900 and was on the extreme flank. Extreme as in that their unit was the unit that was furthest away from the center and they only had one unit on their flank and open space on their other. The outer men of that unit must have felt somewhat exposed as they had a guy to one side and nothing on the other side.

They would almost certainly have been part of a light cavalry company and considering the amorphous nature of such flank screening they mIght not have known they were the extreme.

Extremely exposed which is why you'd try to anchor your flank on some obstacle like a geographic feature and/or use cavalry to keep the flank from being turned. A key element of battle during the 19th century was extending your lines to make them longer than the enemy in order to flank him while not stretching so thin that they broke through.
