How crazy was Ungern Von Sternberg ?

It seems that one of the truths that are taken for granted here at AH beside failure of Sealion and awesomeness of Teddy Roosevelt is the unquestionable madness of this guy. He was the craziest of all RCW warlords but still, the oddities that wiki provides on him don't make him THAT crazy. ( was a mystic who merged Buddhist and Christian religions in his mind, wanted to restore Mongolian empire under Boghd Khan, was reactionary who believed in monarchy as a state from all the way and wanted to establish them whenever he could ). Anyone has any other examples on him?

He also was an Anti- Semite and believed the greatest enemies of his rule in Mongolia were the local Jews. (Not that there really were many Jews in Mongolia).

That would be interesting - "Ungern Khan, The Mongols Come Again - Starring Timmy and Jimmy the Alien Space Bats" perhaps?

Sorry, but that's about the only way I can see von Sternberg actually being more than a crazed footnote in history.

I don't often read ASB TLs, but when I do, they'd be about Ungern Von Sternberg.

But seriously, he seems less 'crazy' and more obsessed with the Oriental. Obsessed to a crazy level perhaps.

He believed he was the reincarnation of Genghis Khan. At least he felt he was a reincarnated guy who *won* wars as opposed to Patton, who thought he was a reincanation of Napoleon who lost them. :p

He liked to torture anyone who questioned his plans in the slightest. Even asking for more information was a good way to be tied to separate tree branches which would be pulled apart with horses.

He was also so dedicated to his goal of restoring monarchy that he surrounded himself with every psychotic lowlife, reject, and cutthroat mercenary he could find. When you're leading an army of crazies and do absolutely nothing to reel them in, it does little to help your reputation.
